Horsetails in autumn.
The stems of horsetails show very different patterns: some are closely striped, some look like a venomous snake, with threatening colours, others more modestly greenish brown. Usually we notice horsetails in spring and summer when they carry spore-bearing bodies on the fertile stems. But even now the stems of the rough horsetail (Equisetum hyemale) can be admired. They persist throughout winter, covering small clearings in sparse forests and on meadow fringes.
