We have noticed small signs of spring all winter: with the January warmth maples started dripping sap, at the southward walls of houses snowdrops press up …

Last Thursday Viive Eisler discovered a flock of at least 19 starlings in Valga and despite the leaden grey day one bird even attempted a song. These seem not to be the daring birds that wintered in Estonia; the groups of those in winter had fewer than 10 birds. The shy song of a lone starling has been heard in Hiiumaa: this can be a bird that has wintered in Estonia.

The strong south-westerly winds suit the migrants, Enn Vilbaste told about lark groups flying past in south-western Estonia; at least part of them turned back towards south. So it goes when there is no food, or the weather again tends to go frosty. And owls are calling.

Keep eyes and ears open, the weekend weather will show plus degrees.
