Springtail.
It has just been snowing, and soon the snow will melt again but this half-way spring weather suits the springtail, Entomobrya nivalis, very well. It appears early from its winter hiding place to eat: there is always a thawed-up pollen grain or some spores around. Only a little is quite enough for the springtail. And now is a safe time for it – no need to fear prowling beasts yet. Because soon they will all be there – spiders and other invertebrates, stiff from the winter cold.
The springtail is very small and seeing it with only your naked eye needs intense observation. But if something white jumps around on the carpet you can assume that it is a springtail.
