Bog landscapes - peat mosses

Bog hollow or hag. Selisoo bog.

The mosses at the sides of the plank trail are worth a glance on a bog ramble. Those peat mosses or sphagnums are what eventually make up  peat. There are 37 species of peat mosses in Estonia, but distinguishing them from each other is truly work for a specialist. Rusty peat moss (Sphagnum fuscum) forms large tussocks. Other common species are the greenish-coloured spread-leaved peat moss (Sphagnum squarrosum) and the purple-tinged Magellan’s peat moss or midway peat moss (Sphagnum magellanicum).
