Ever more seals ...

Grey seals are social creatures. The whole summer, and early autumn, was used for voracious eating in deeper waters. In mid-autumn the energy stores have been replenished and the flocks “exchange experiences” on reefs and small islets. We were expecting these large haul-out groups more than a couple of weeks ago already but stormy weather and rain kept the animals in the water. Hopefully they will appear more often in camera view now, because there is no more any particular need for more food than just refilling the daily energy used up. The winter stores have already been saved.

It is easy to distinguish the females from the males by their coat patterns –they are lighter and speckled, in gayer colours as befits ladies, the gentlemen in more distinguished dark suits.
