On the female fish in the foreground we can see marks of the spawning, a furrow on the body above the anal fin

River trout; Brown trout  Jõeforell or hõrnas  Salmo trutta morpha fario

Yesterday the ice cover on the spawning area thawed completely. The amount of water in the Lavi springs has increased in the milder weather and the spawning in water bodies with spring water continues in January but we will how things work out this year. In previous years we had to get the aquarium out of the water when the big colds arrived; this year the camera is in an underwater box.

The female in the image moves around in the spawning area for the third day. The first day was spent in waiting for a sufficiently dignified suitor; smaller male fish were mercilessly driven off.

Such individuals may weigh up to a kilo and a half. The number of spawned roe grains from a female of this size can exceed 1500, but they are spawned in portions of a few hundred. Thus the spawning lasts for several days and is quite exhausting for the female fish
