Female butterfly
Large white; Cabbage white Suur-kapsaliblikas Pieris brassicae
The photos show the differences between the sexes of the large white. The forewings of the female have two large black dots, the male lacks them.
The undersides of the wings are pale yellow, and the undersides of the forewings of both sexes have two black patches. The wing span is 5-6 centimetres.
Male butterfly
The large whites can be encountered almost everywhere and we can see the imagos of the first generation from mid-May to the end of June. The second generation can be seen from early July to September.
The female of the large white lays eggs from the beginning of May, e g 20-30 eggs on the underside of a cabbage leaf
As field vermin the caterpillars can certainly make cabbage growers unhappy.
The caterpillars of the large white are probably quite well known, at least by gardeners.
The small white is similar to the imago of the female great white, only clearly smaller.
The Butterfly of the Year - the clouded apollo (we will write about it soon) - and the black-veined white are similar in size to the great white; as a characteristic difference the clearly visible black wing veins that the cabbage whites lack should be mentioned.
