White-Tailed Eagle Camera News

The white-tailed eagle camera is located at a nest in West Estonia, a neighbour to the nest of Linda and Sulev that we have watched previously.

News archive until 2016 is here.

For the first time since the start of the egg-laying male  Sulev brought a prey to the nest  for his partner. Not a fish but a migratory bird.

At sea there are areas with open water but fish seldom gather in such places. Rather they still keep in the safe shelter of the ice cover.

We were expecting an egg in the nest tonight – and it did arrive.

So the first egg was in the nest on Sunday evening, March 18th; today after five o’clock the second egg, on March 21st. If everything proceeds nicely we may expect the laying of a third egg on Saturday afternoon.

The female carrying out this year’s important event and the male encouraging her…

Today the eagle pair have taken turns to warm the egg in the nest.  In early evening a snowfall started but we have seen the birds incubating in a heap of snow in earlier years too.

Which bird is in the nest? By her dark eyes we recognize the female (really simple to distinguish them this year).

The egg is difficult to see but it is in the nest

Late-winter frosty and clear weather, in addition a strong westerly wind – in the eagle nest about 6 degrees of frost might be felt. The female cannot keep the egg without cover for long. The night will not be frosty but for tomorrow sleet is foretold!

Who then live in this nest? The answer might be – white-tailed eagles. But looking more precisely into the matter the nest owners are a white-tailed eagle pair. The one with the darker plumage and dark eyes is the female whom we met immediately after installing the camera (February 5th). According to the classical identification it might be said that the female is quite young (considering the eyes and the general colouring of the plumage). But the tail colouring points to a mature age. It is however not impossible that this bird has some kind of pigmentation deviation and the preponderance of dark colouring does not indicate youth? The female was suspicious towards the camera to start with and preferred rather to fly away from the foreign eye.

The white-tailed eagle camera is installed at a nest in West Estonia. In the same area the web camera was placed in 2009-2013, at the so called Linda and Sulev’s nest. The first of the nests at that time was situated across the bog which is visible behind the tree crowns from the present nest. The first plan to install the camera at the new nest of white-tailed eagle Anna and Uku, popular in 2016, did not succeed since the new nest too had fallen down in winter.

Why don’t we see Anna and Uku this year?

There has been little movement in the white-tailed eagle nest that last year gathered a record number of clicks. Although sounds of eagles and others are heard from there. During the breeding period of 2016 the nest life of white-tailed eagles Anna and Uku was watched more than 10 million times. The main characters of this real life broadcast try to keep a more modest image this year. They have not even passed by in camera view. Whether they have flown past at a greater distance some time we don’t know.

Small mishaps always happen to the eaglets hanging about in the nest tree – they cannot estimate a gust of wind, or become too daring. Large birds, wing span already a couple of metres, and so they need not particularly fear a fall. Calls can be heard from a couple of branch layers below.

Last year there was a similar accident in the white-tailed eagle nest, see the previous video as reminder LINK

A few minutes earlier female eagle  Anna again arrived with a fish to coax the eaglets out of the nest. She showed nicely how to throw oneself from a branch so that the wind carries you - and left with the fish.

8.35 was departure time for one eaglet. Flying does work when you really want to or when hunger pinches.

After a week nothing is left of the white-tailed eagles’ nest. After the storm the adults fed the eaglets frequently (in a storm fishing is not possible even for eagles) and kept close to the nest (providing support to the eaglets?).
