White-Tailed Eagle Camera News

The white-tailed eagle camera is located at a nest in West Estonia, a neighbour to the nest of Linda and Sulev that we have watched previously.

A severe storm the whole Saturday and there was already a fear that the right-hand part of the nest had fallen down with an eaglet. From 6 o’clock the storm started to abate, and bird calls were heard from the nest forest but there are still strong winds.

Only remnants of the nest remain but all barely fledged eaglets have stood up to the harsh ordeal. Nearby the calls of the adult birds can be heard.

The large birds must manage with a smaller nest area

The rains of the last few days have soaked the eagle nest through and through, in addition there have been strong gusts of wind.

The nest area has become clearly smaller but the eaglets are already at an age when they are able to get across shorter distances by flying.

Waiting for adults to return to nest

After the ringing of the eagle chicks yesterday (Friday) the large and prudent adults have not come to the nest. Calls of the female as well as male can be heard near the nest.

There is no risk of the chicks starving, their bodies are already adapted for such events. Don’t worry – we are sure that the adults will appear at the nest because in earlier years too similar situations have occurred (and occur elsewhere in the world too as we have seen in camera view).

Urmas took the trouble to climb to the nest with a rope, without using climbing irons. The trunk of the nest tree is not large enough.

Rings are in place on legs, the eagle chicks measured and weighed.

Morning in eagle nest

The chicks of white-tailed eagle pair Anna and Uku were hatched on April 13, 16 and 19, at exactly the same intervals that the eggs were laid in the nest, that is on March 8, 11 and 14. All can calculate the lengths of the incubation periods for themselves.

.

We have reached a line of birthday celebrations. In the white-tailed eagle nest the eagle chicks were hatched on April 13, 16 and 19, so the oldest and largest eagle-to-be has two weeks of life. The middle one becomes two weeks old on April 30, and the smallest on May 3.

Second egg in WTE nest ”talking "

It is not a speck of dirt on the egg, this egg already ”talks”

Actually the eggs had already been carefully scrutinised in the morning – what and how? In windless weather the ”squeaking” would have been heard earlier.

So on Saturday we will see the second hatched eagle chick….

Yesterday morning first-time mother Anna had to feed the newly hatched chick for the first time. There was no doubt that the instincts developed over the millennia would not start working, but sometimes it may happen that a bond between the female and the chicks is not created. Today things already run nicely, but a good thing that no new chicks have hatched in the nest…
