White-tailed eagle; Sea eagle Merikotkas Haliaeëtus albicilla
.
On Thursday morning we could see the first hole in the WTE egg. The eagle chick, not yet hatched from the egg, interacted with the parents already a couple of days earlier by calls.
For large birds the offspring takes more than a day-and-night to hatch, and it must get used to breathing oxygen. As the video shows, the adult does not help the chick at the hatching, it must manage on its own. A chick’s tool to help is the ”egg tooth” on the upper surface of the beak. It drops off soon after the hatching. We will discuss the whole hatching process in detail tomorrow
