The work will take place on September 9-11.
At last the time has come when we can do something in practice for the main actor of this year..
Survey data show that a main reason why black storks are not able to raise their young to adults is the lack of food. Unlike its white relative the black stork’s main food is fish and when the stocks of fish are at an end in small rivers, or the large bird is not able to get at them any longer, the chicks will starve.
The voluntary work done in Karula last autumn on the initiative of the Ornithological Society showed that clearing the rivers was very effective. Eedi, the black stork provided with a transmitter, this year went looking for food most often in the river sections that the diligent workers cleared of shrubs last year.
Our plan this year is similar. Thanks to the transmitters the movements of the Karula area storks are quite well known and the potential feeding areas mapped. Now we only need to roll up our sleeves and clear some forest creeks in a bad state from shrubs and make them easier accessible for the black storks and also remove obstructions that disturb the water flow and the movement of fish.
Moreover we can enjoy a part of the beautiful nature of Karula, and in the evening enjoy an especially pleasant smoke sauna and listen to tales about black storks.
