Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis
We are pleased to announce that Estonian Bird of the Year 2025, the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), has its own live webcam now!
The cameras are located on a small island on the west coast of Estonia. There are tens of occupied nests around the cameras, but hundreds more further away. Most nests currently contain 0-1 eggs, but a couple of nests already have 4-5 eggs.
Some examples of things to look out for:
- social interactions between males and females (some still dance!),
- nest building,
- hatching and fledging dates,
- feeding intervals,
- predator attacks (gulls, eagles),
- sightings or calls of other bird species.
More information about the Great Cormorant can be found on our Bird of the Year website (In Estonian, but can be auto-translated to some degree): https://eoy.ee/kormoran/.
If you enjoy the cormorant camera, then please consider making a small donation to BirdLife Estonia so we could continue to protect the cormorants from unfair treatment (egg oiling, lethal scaring, large-scale hunting) by educating people and taking legal actions.
When making a donation, write “Donation” or “Annetus” (donation in Estonian) in the payment details. If you are from Estonia, you can also add your personal identification code in the payment details if you wish to deduct the donation from your taxable income.
