The female has a considerable stock for feeding the chicks

The two chicks of the eagle owl pair were hatched on the night to April 23. The incubation period of the large birds is long, up to 35 days. The three eggs laid in the nest we saw already on March 27 when the webcam transmission started.

From the egg with ”holes”in it sounds could be heard late in the evening

So owl mother Klaara laid her eggs in the nest trunk on March 15, 18, 21 and 24. This  is how larger birds particularly birds of prey do,  because the development of larger eggs is an energy-intense activity.

In the evenings Klaara has been actively ”clattering” the eggs around and socializing with them in a quiet voice (with male Klaus she communicates quite differently).

Let us look back in time - Klaara laid the eggs on March 15, 18, 21, and 24. It is common among tawny owls that the eggs are laid at intervals of a few days.

When the first egg has been laid the female also starts incubating. Until the second egg we saw Klaara quite often moving outside in the evenings – after all she may well have needed to meet Klaus and socialize.

The breeding territory of eagle owls in Kurzeme (Courland) in Latvia is known since 1998. For several years nesting on the ground failed, and so a nest platform was built in a spruce at a height of 10 m in 2013. Since then the breeding of the eagle owl pair has been successful.

We were hoping to see the fourth egg in the nest trunk last night, after sunset when Klaara goes out after seven o’clock to ”stretch her legs”. The flight outside did last only a very short time, so we could hope that something more was going on.

The eggs were laid on March 15, 18, 21, 24.

Klaara  laid the third egg in the nest hollow after midnight.

She does not leave the nest immediately after laying an egg. With feeding everything seems to be in order for her. On the bottom of the nest trunk we see the white eggs surrounded by owl pellets – they contain mouse hairs, bones, teeth, all that the bird cannot digest. The pellets are ejected from the digestive tract by vomiting.
