Hare's-tail cottongrass

Tupp-villpea     Eriophorum vaginatum

In June and July the hare’s-tail cottongrass with its seeds is at its most noticeable – the white tufts or “Bog Granny’s hair“ on occasionally wet bog surfaces and at verges of bog water pools are everywhere.

The tussocks, stems and narrow leaves of the plant appeared already when snow and ice were still there. The modest but decorative grey inflorescence spikelets are out, dappled with yellow stamens in places. It is spring in the bog.
