Broad-bordered bee hawkmoth   Kimalas-lottsuru   Hemaris fuciformis

We are used to notice the flight of the hawkmoths in the evening, and so it is with most of the hawkmoth species that can be seen in Estonia (there are 17 species here).

For a hawkmoth busy in daytime the broad-bordered bee haawkmoth is almost always a safe guess; at that time the other species are resting on tree trunks, little visible thanks to their good camouflage colouring.

The Vana-Pärnu shore meadow is kept open by grazing cattle. A number of different bird species live in the meadow, it seems that some of them also use the insects that circle around the cattle for food.

In nature things are a little different. In southern Estonia summer has begun but on the northern coast the beautiful springtime still lasts.

Pale prominent

Pale prominent   Nokktutlane     Pterostoma palpinum

Pale prominents occur in all Estonia and they can be seen in forests and coppices but also in gardens and parks. The moths hatch in the second half of May and fly until mid-July.

After the ringing of the eagle chicks yesterday (Friday) the large and prudent adults have not come to the nest. Calls of the female as well as male can be heard near the nest.

There is no risk of the chicks starving, their bodies are already adapted for such events. Don’t worry – we are sure that the adults will appear at the nest because in earlier years too similar situations have occurred (and occur elsewhere in the world too as we have seen in camera view).
