At the end of December, I headed out to observe eagles. As is my custom, I arrived under the cover of darkness and settled in quietly to wait. A light dusting of snow covered the ground, and as the first light of morning broke, the forest came alive with the calls of tits. Soon, a group of jays arrived; they remained active throughout the day, their presence fluctuating in intensity.
On this year’s Giving Tuesday (Annetamistalgud), BirdLife Estonia is raising funds to install a web camera in a Common Swift (Apus apus) nest.
Our goal is to raise 4000 euros to cover all the necessary costs such as purchasing and setting up the nest camera, streaming the video and providing narration.
We will use your donations to purchase the camera and audio equipment, install and maintain the equipment, cover data and server services, and pay for other related costs.
We are sad to announce the passing of Gennadi Skromnov, the founder and long-time lead editor of the nature portal Looduskalender. The Looduskalender he started in 2002 has become an indispensable guide to the wonderful world of Estonian nature for tens of thousands of Estonians and international nature enthusiasts.
Looduskalender had its humble beginnings in early spring 2002 as a sub-page of the website Ilm.ee, where summaries of current nature events were published a couple of times a week. However, Gennadi´s visionary spirit gave the idea an international dimension, and so the number of enthusiasts grew far beyond Estonia.
