A baby boom is starting in the heron colony – just imagine the hatching of the chicks of a some hundred nesting pairs at roughly the same time !
For information – the heron pairs keep together only during one nesting period.
The females lay three to five eggs into the nest (every other day, but sometimes with intervals of a few days) . They start incubating almost immediately after the laying of the first egg. So we can see heron chicks of varying sizes in camera view. Incubation until hatching lasts on average twenty-five days, and both adults take part.
In the first three weeks after the hatching of the chicks one of the adults is always in the nest to keep the chicks warm during night as well as in the changeable spring weather.
