Now that there are so few birds around, it can even be interesting to study the house sparrow, and learn how to distinguish male and female birds.

It is a fact that the number of the best kown passerine in the world has been halved twice in Estonia during a couple of decades.

The male bird has a chin patch that the female bird lacks altogether. But let us look at other differences too: the crown of the male’s head is black, and a brown curved streak goes from the eye. The female sparrow’s head is brownish, and the eye stripe is not so dark.
The colour of the male’s body plumage is brighter: chestnut brown back with yellow and black. The female birds have duller back plumage: grey with black and beige.
On the brownish wings both have a white band and black lengthwise stripes; the underside of the birds is grey.

House sparrows are mostly sedentary birds, and find their winter food near people. In the country, where cattle still is kept, the sparrows live in small flocks near the cattle barns.

If the description doesn’t fit and the bird seems to have a gayer plumage, it is probably a tree sparrow. The male and female of tree sparrows look alike. Note the black cheek patch. They can be seen on the outskirts of cities, even for instance in Kadriorg in Tallinn
