Early morning feeding

Starling    Kuldnokk        Sturnus vulgaris

Yesterday evening the busy female bird allowed us glimpses of what seemed like a fifth hatched starling chick...

By early morning all six starling chicks were in the nest, the egg shells were tidied out of the nest box and are lying about somewhere on the ground nearby – the starlings do not hide the hatching of their chicks.

Badger      Mäger     Meles meles

When the adult has judged the surroundings to be safe the badger cub is allowed to leave the sett. We see it just for a moment – the new large and day-lit world does not seem tempting.

Butterbur flowering

Butterbur        Harilik katkujuur        Petasites hybridus

At the same time as the colt’s-foot the eye-catching but rarely occurring butterbur flowers.

Where can we find the butterbur in nature?
The butterbur prefers a fertile fresh habitat with clayey soil.. The banks of water bodies, and also the verges of ditches and ponds suit, but the plant has also reached the seashore. Suitable habitats may also be found in humid parts of old parks.

Klaara on evening flight out of nest

Tawny owl      Kodukakk      Strix aluco

By today all owl chicks have hatched.

A brief survey: on March 30 we could see the first egg in the nest. The next eggs Klaara laid on April 2 and 5.

When exactly one month had passed, or on April 30, a chick hatched from the first egg, the second on May 1, and the last on May 3.

Female Suvi trusts leaving the nest only when male Sulev is near it

White-tailed eagle     Merikotkas         Haliaeëtus albicilla

By today the eagle chick is a week old – it hatched as you may remember on April 24.

It is nice to watch the development. Sulev has cared for the food  store and in the last few days Suvi too has contributed. The chick is fed fish caught earlier – interesting whether that is drier for tearing off more suitable pieces.
