The bank voles are most intensely busy when dusk arrives, but in the current weather, with little natural daylight and generally grey, in daytime too.
The children of the Kiviõli school 2nd form made an interesting forest trip to set up a trail camera in a clump of trees near the school together with their parents and teacher Jaanika Merirand. For the children the trail camera was a novelty. What do the children hope to see in it? Ken Romet would like to see a hare, Isabella an elk, Kaspar - roe deer, bear, lynx, marten, badger. Badgers, raccoon dogs and roe deer are definitely present in the forest and the trail camera is already transmitting their activities.
Jackal, Golden jackal Šaakal or harilik šaakal Canis aureus
If the jackals still appeared to be rather skinny in early November then in this video from November 20 they look well fed and quite round in their fresh winter furs.
Despite the temptation the cautious creatures keep away from the bait: the genetic memory of the species holds memories of how they were destroyed by poisons added to the bait in their established habitats.
Ten years is actually a very long time these days. November 24th counts as the Looduskalender forum’s birthday.

It is a common annual autumn view to see the roe deer enjoy the sprouting seeds in grain fields. The male in the video still wears his antlers despite having winter fur but part of his species comrades are already bare-headed.

The roe deer that we see in November already have their greyish brown winter fur coat with the white rear mirror on, despite the warm weather. Those who are a little late with the change of fur still look a little darker than the others.

On Thursday November 15th the annual winter bird counting season on the mainland started. The Estonian Ornithological Society invites both experienced ornithologists and newcomers to join in.
During the winter the birds should be counted on three occasions in a territory and path of one’s own choice. The first counting period is on November 15 – 28. The observer must recognize wintering birds (up to 40 species) from their calls and exterior. For the count a path about 10 km long should be chosen that may run through different landscapes.
The choice of location for the jackal camera has really been successful. Not a single day has passed as yet without jackals in camera view. It seems that the camera is at a path of the jackals that they patrol several times a day. As soon as the jackals disappear out of sight the foxes are there and the other way about; so they alternate in the darkness. Small morsels behind the rock attracts them and makes them stay around a little longer here.
The expressive photo of a lynx photographed at close quarters in a springtime branch thicket is currently also part of the Animal of the Year photo exhibition ”Secret paths of forest cat” in the RMK Tallinn office.

One spring day a friend living at the Peipsi shore called to tell me that he had met a lynx and also noted a prey animal killed by this lynx - a roe deer. I asked him about the landscape and conditions there and advised him how he might get good photos of the lynx. I had been in such a situation myself and I knew that a lynx usually returns to a freshly slain roe deer.

Hedgehog under maple
European hedgehog Harilik siil Erinaceus europaeus
Despite the cold weather last week hedgehogs have still been seen moving around. In North Estonia grass still grows, between the fallen leaves there are still edible things to be found and in daytime there are ten degrees of warmth. In such autumn grey weather hedgehogs can be seen around even in broad daylight.

Cautious animal on Friday night
Jackal, Golden jackal Šaakal or harilik šaakal Canis aureus
A comparatively new animal in our nature: only in 2011 they were thought to exist in Estonia and in 2012 the first animal was shot in the Matsalu area.
In their traditional habitats their social living and cleverness is valued despite the fact that they clearly cause damage in the surrounding nature.
