How the beaver survived the drought

During the drought in July the beaver acted like a true master builder and prepared for even worse to come. The mid-summer dry spells drained smaller creeks and ponds. The earlier flow of water ended and the water level in the beaver habitat started to drop. It was the last minute to check the dams and to seal them.

In the video we see the beaver adjusting the dam and adding more willow branches for more  security.

The weighty fish contingent has not started their journey yet: they might reach the Keila  River estuary perhaps in a month at the earliest. Sooner or later – depending on weather and the water conditions the very large salmons and sea trout come in camera view and maybe  groups of tens of river lampreys that soon begin to gather in the river to be prepared early for the springtime spawning .

The young bird Aru (letter A on the leg number) has injured the underside of its wing on its test flights but the slight tear seems to be healing. It is the bird that spends most of its time in the nest. The other young bird can be seen in early morning

The young birds were 86 days old today, next week they will be three months on August 16. The migration period should be starting for the young birds.

All youngsters in the nest

Osprey        Kalakotkas        Pandion haliaetus

The young birds that have turned two months old are busy and sometimes romp around each according to its own character. The adults have managed the feeding of the young birds successfully. Let us hope that the last month will pass likewise without mishaps.

Male Tõnn takes care of bringing food. We will learn more about the activities of the spotted eagle family in the next few days.

READER'S LETTER: White stork nest in farm yard

Adult bird and young stork  in evening light

I read in Looduskalender that you are invited to send your stories from nature around your home.

I moved to live in  Kärpla village, in a farmhouse that had been standing empty for more than six years. A couple of weeks later a white stork moved into the farm yard. While the house stood empty the stork nest was also empty for all the years. My question is: why do the white storks need someone to live in the house or near the nest?

In early morning they set off on flights but the young birds must be back in the nest around eight o’clock because male Karl might come to the nest with the early morning prey about then. Who arrives too late in the nest may be left without food – and who wants that.

Female stork Kati

The young storks have flying exercises in the morning, everything seems to be order with the orienteering sense of the young birds. After that they have to wait for male Karl with the morning meal and the day goes on.

For some days we have no longer seen mother Kati in the nest. As we already know from earlier years the female leaves first, to head quietly for the wintering grounds.
