Jackal, Golden jackal      Šaakal or harilik šaakal      Canis aureus

If the jackals still appeared to be rather skinny in early November then in this video from November 20  they look well fed and quite round  in their fresh winter furs.

Despite the temptation the cautious creatures keep away from the bait: the genetic memory of the species holds memories of how they were destroyed by poisons added to the bait in their established habitats.

The choice of location for the jackal camera has really been successful. Not a single day has passed as yet without jackals in camera view. It seems that the camera is at a path of the jackals that they patrol several times a day. As soon as the jackals disappear out of sight the foxes are there and the other way about; so they alternate in the darkness. Small morsels behind the rock attracts them and makes them stay around a little longer here.

Cautious animal on Friday night

Jackal, Golden jackal     Šaakal or harilik šaakal          Canis aureus

A comparatively new animal in our nature: only in 2011 they were thought to exist in Estonia and in 2012 the first animal was shot in the Matsalu area.

In their traditional habitats their social living and cleverness is valued  despite the fact that they clearly cause damage in the surrounding nature.

Since the beginning of November last year until April this year it was for the first time possible to observe jackals and other creatures coming in camera view through a web camera on the Metsküla shore in West Estonia. In addition to the jackals, surprising guests were a female lynx with two whelps, a solitary wolf - a species earlier not noted in this area, a red deer male and the sea ice boomed nicely once …

Last year in the autumn we installed the web Camera at the Metsküla shore, in a site from where at about five kilometres distance in 2013 the first evidence came to prove the presence of the golden jackal   (Canis aureus) in Estonia.

Now we will leave the jackals on their own in Metsküla and bring to mind who has been seen and heard in camera view during the five months.

Already in the evening at the installation of the camera the ringing howl  of two jackals sounded from the beach. The jackals here also howl at propeller-driven airplanes and the evening plane between Kuressaare and Tallinn almost always made the animals howl .

The shallow MatsaluBay with a water salinity near zero is freezing,  only a few openings are visible because the surface water already is at a couple of degrees minus. We will see how the view has changed tomorrow; strong winds from south are forecast. The mute swans moved away from the forming ice, out of the Matsalu bay.

The jackals were missing from camera view for some days. Were the IR lamps actually ”visible” to the sensitive canines or did they sense them in some other way?

Jackal; Golden jackal    Šaakal or harilik šaakal     Canis aureus

A new animal in Estonian nature but where they are permanent residents their collective life mode and smartness is acknowledged despite the significant damage that they cause in the environment.
