Path of woodcock on Wednesday morning in the snow in Virumaa

Woodcock; European woodcock  Metskurvits; folk name also nepp         Scolopax rusticola

The snow on Wednesday morning quite likely surprised the bird too; for food it looks for all kinds of creepy-crawlies in the mud with its long beak. There is no panic yet to leave towards south since the soil surface is not yet frozen.

Most woodcocks have already headed towards south but some that spend the winter here can be seen almost every year.

Plumed prominent    Vahtratutlane        Ptilophora plumigera

Half a century ago the plumed prominent only occurred in West Estonia and even there it was rare. By now they have been encountered almost everywhere where maples grow.
