Dear bird friends and watchers of the webcams!

I am a constant bird camera observer and ponder about what is seen there: who, what, why and how in the nest life of the chicks since their hatching.

I have noticed similarities as well as differences depending on the species, the age of the chicks and other factors such as the relations between parents and chicks and external forces.

In the case of the chicks of the black storks it has been clear that their internal relations are close and many different behaviours and reactions can be seen.

By now the LK forum members have linked the codes on the leg rings to names for the young birds.

XJ – was given the name Jaak (after the last letter of the ring). The wing length of the oldest osprey chick was 305 mm at the measuring and the weight 1,40 kilos; As a reminder, even with adults the males are smaller and lighter

Birthday kids

Almost a week ago our stork chicks got rings on their legs as well as transmitters as light-weight backpacks on their backs. The birdmen get more information about the movements of the young birds before their breeding period arrives.

All operations were carried out simultaneously in order to disturb nest life as little as possible and everything passed successfully.

This spring mew gull Enn (10 years old, hatched 2008 at Kakurahu), nesting at the Kakurahu in Matsalu, got a GPS transmitter.

Last week he was still busy at his breeding territory in the colony but now he has gone on migration. Last  night at midnight he stopped at the south-eastern coast of Saaremaa but today he already spent at the southern tip of the Gotland island.

Storklets being brought back to nest

Black stork         Must-toonekurg         Ciconia nigra

Today the storklets got transmitters on their backs and rings on their legs. Urmas Sellis together with other bird people undertook the task and not in the nest but under it – the procedure took some time. In daytime the adults are hunting for food and there is a smaller risk for the birdmen to ”get caught” by the adults.

Why does the seal monitoring camera not show any images?

A white-tailed eagle uses the camera stand for sitting on

Four days ago,in early morning, the camera turned on for a moment but went off as soon. The weather in the weekend was stormy but the Internet connection worked.

Perhaps there will be some time in the weekend when the weather allows the reason to be found and when we know the reason we will see what and how to handle it further

While the month-old eaglet still had to be coddled by the mother then a strong development towards independence has taken place during the last week.
