Lungwort

Lungwort
Harilik kopsurohi

A plant of fertile soils, flowers in deciduous and mixed forests, at the same time as liverworts (Hepatica). Just opened flowers are pink, slowly changing to lilac, sometimes carmine red; with age they bleach into pale blue.

This early flowerer is a perennial, with a creeping, well branched rhizome that allows the lungwort to spread. The above-ground stems grow out from buds on the rhizome; the buds develop already in midwinter. And already when the snow melts it is possible to see the flower buds.
