Bean geese and greater white-fronted geese at the Kärevere water meadow. Alam-Pedja
The bird watch arranged by the Estonian Ornithological Society took place last weekend.
Branta and Anser geese were observed in the greatest numbers and accounted for nearly half of the total number of observed birds - 42 000 individual birds. Of the Anser geese the most often observed were greater white-fronted geese (26 000) and bean geese (11 500). The five most numerous species also included: mew gulls (2 700), tufted ducks (2 200) and chaffinches (2 100).
Most frequent in the species lists were chaffinch, great tit, hooded crow, raven and starling.
Besides the more common birds the redbreasted goose was also seen. Three bird watch groups managed to our national bird and this year’s bird of the year, the barn swallow. The final summaries from the Easter bird watching days will be ready in the beginning of May when all observation results have arrived at the EOÜ.
The EOÜ is the largest organisation in Estonia bringing together all who are interested in birds. EOÜ works with investigations of our bird fauna and its conservation and raising public awareness of birds. In May the organisation will be 90 years old.
