The lesser spotted eagle pair in the former black stork nest have been named Tuuli and Remo by the forum. Since May 1 there is a second egg in the nest.
In the beginning however black stork Padis visited the nest, and later on another single stork.
Usually lesser spotted eagles build their own nest and use it during a number of years. Sometimes nests of other, larger raptors are used – buzzard or hen harrier – or, as here, old nests of black storks. Some spotted eagle pairs have several nests that they use by turns over the years. Nest building or tidying begins immediately after arrival. The full clutch, at the end of April or beginning of May, contains 1-2 (very rarely 3) eggs. The female starts incubating at once after the first egg has been laid, in our case on
April 27.
Because of this the chicks also hatch at different dates. The incubation period is 37-41 days. Generally one chick fledges, very rarely two. The breeding success of our lesser spotted eagles follows a three-year cycle. It is mainly governed by the numbers of their prey, voles. This year may well be a "mouse year“.
