Starlings nest astonishingly simultaneously. "Distracting“ egg shells get thrown out from the nest at once when the chicks hatch – when you find the first ones the baby boom in your garden has already started. Nearly at once the intense traffic of the starling pair to the nest begins too. Food in the beak, to the nest and then quickly away again to get the next load. The streaks of faeces on the tree show that who eats must ... Nest cleanliness is important.
Let’s look a little back and forth in time: the eggs were incubated by the female and male both during a couple of weeks. The chicks are fed with insects to start with, then larvae, earthworms, snails and other invertebrates. Within three weeks the young starling chicks fledge, so it should be worthwhile to observe the nest neighbourhood more closely in the first June week....
