The swallowtail is considered to be one of our most beautiful butterflies – large and conspicuous and easily identifiable. This butterfly has the largest wing span, 8-9 centimetres, and on the hind wings it carries characteristic spurs.

Mostly seen in open landscapes where it flies fast and can go very high up. Not so rarely these master fliers stray into cities.

When feeding it calmly stays in place to suck nectar and lets itself be admired. The swallowtails that hatched in spring at once start looking for partners since they have about one month to ensure a next generation. The “language” of the butterfly imagos is chemical signals that human olfactory senses can’t catch.
