Small whites (Pieris rapae) and green-veined whites are both very common butterflies in Estonia and very similar, it is particularly difficult to tell them apart from the second summer generation onwards. The small white flies where there are Cruciferae species growing, in gardens and fields. The green-veined white is also seen in fresh meadows and forest clearings.
To identify the species with certainty you need to see the yellowish underside of the wings of the green-veined white, where the greenish, as if dusted wing veining shows. The underside of the little white’s wings is yellowish grey and without veining.
The forewings of both butterflies have black spots, from the number of them the males and females can be distinguished, the latter always have two spots.
