These attractive birds live on the seashore and the islands, nesting on the sands or pebbles, or, in north-western Estonia in seashore gravel pits.
Easily recognisable from their exterior – the top of the head and back are sand grey, a white patch on the stem of the beak, eyes covered by a black mask. The neck is circled by a white band and the breast has a black shirt front. The beak is orange with a black tip, and the legs orange- or yellow-coloured.
Very similar to its relative the little ringed plover, but the beak of the latter is black.
In recent years the plovers have decreased steeply. It is entertaining to watch them catching flies on the seaweed banks, getting on nicely with other contestants for the food. Today they kept company with the house martins nesting nearby.
