The flowers of the Queen of the Night open at night, but why?
In its native lands the temperature is lower at nights and so moisture evaporation from the flower is also lower. In the night and the light of the moon many suitable pollinators move around: moths or bats which feed on the nectar. The plant makes itself visible to the pollinators by the white and large flowers.
The species that can be grown as houseplants in Estonia begin to open their flowers around 7-8 in the evening: we can see the flower fully open at midnight, and it closes within a couple of hours. In the morning the flower has wilted.
