Spotted eagles mostly hunt for prey in non-intensely farmed grassland, but also in wetlands, fields and other open areas, to a small extent in forests. The hunting territory is as a rule quite near the nest, at a distance of up to 1-2 km. Spotted eagles hunt their prey in flight or by stalking from trees at forest edges or other higher positions (solitary trees, hay bales, power masts). When food resources are scarce they search actively for food, flying or walking, but when there is enough prey they prefer stalking their prey. The prey is mainly small mammals – voles and moles – often also frogs and birds, sometimes snakes and larger insects..
