Urmas ringing the stork chicks. Ring 711C is for the leg of the biggest and 711T for the smallest.
Today at noon Urmas adjusted the focus of the web camera lens to make the image a little sharper. The ringing, weighing and measuring of the stork chicks – five weeks old today – took a little more than half an hour. Urmas was assisted by journalist Ulvar and photographer Arno from Eesti Päevaleht. We will soon set out the weights and measures.
Urmas wasn’t caught by the adult birds and the stork chicks recovered quickly from the little shock and no longer had to play “dead”. Interesting - from whom have they learnt this protection trick? The chicks are so big that both adult birds have to get food for them. In early August the young will fly out from the nest but during the following few weeks they will still return to it for the night.
As a last task a new, better position for the solar panels has to be found in the broadleaf forest so that the panels can feed the batteries – maybe it succeeds. Hopefully the adversities of this year will be over with this.
All that goes on can be read and seen in the Looduskalender forum:
