REMO SAVISAAR: “Getting close“

Wildlife photographer Remo Savisaar speaks of how to get close to alert and shy models – birds and mammals. Sometimes even so close, that the distance between the camera and the subject will be merely a dozen centimetres. What kind of preparatory work do we need for that? Showing his pictures Remo will tell the stories behind them. He will also present different hides and hints for shooting.

“FROM FLOWERS TO LANDSCAPES – THE ART AND TECHNIQUES OF NATURE  PHOTOGRAPHY“

"Flowers are colourful, and don’t fly away – so why are they so hard to photograph well? We’ll start out with a look at some of the ways in which you can improve your flower photography, from close-ups to plants in context, and even landscapes full of flowers. We’ll tackle different approaches, from simple identification shots to prizewinners, with plenty of examples, both good and bad!"
During the last few years Bob Gibbons has studied and photographed the most flowerful locations of the world for his new book. We’ll follow him on his world tour to the hottest flower shooting spots, enjoy his pictures and relevant comments.
Taking pictures of flowers one will inevitably get interested in insects visiting the blossoms, mammals feeding upon plants and other living beings, generally relying on vegetation. Bob will also explain how to take pictures of them as well, even without specific equipment. The last but not least topic will cover how to sell nature photographs.

"SLEEPY MORNINGS"
Early hours are the most inspiring nature shooting time for Jarek - hours when your pillow is at its softest. On the screen there will be moments of early morning wood and bog landscapes with Jarek’s verbal comments about how these shots were obtained.

10.00 Laelatu Wooded Meadow

BOB GIGGONS’ (UK) WORKSHOP

We will tackle flower, fungi and fall colour photography under Bob’s tutelage, concentrating on everything found in the picturesque Laelatu wooded meadow. If possible take along your cameras and tripods.
NB! The workshop may start in different time due to actual weather conditions. The most recent information will be announced a day before in the Lihula Manor House and in the Culture Club.

TIIT LEITO:  “MEMORIES FROM THE PAST“.

Tiit Leito has been the director of the Hiiumaa Islets Landscape Reserve for a long time, later having a job as an environmental expert in preparing new proposed reserves. He has simultaneously been active as a nature photographer and a publisher. From 1984 he has published 11 books, 40 smaller publications, about a dozen calendars, photography exhibitions, picture programmes and expositions about Estonia’s nature. Tiit Leito’s exhibition this time does not exactly match the usual understanding of nature photography. Who is really interested in why this exhibition is as it is, is welcome to Tiit Leito’s author’s hour on Friday, Sept 16

 

“OUR LIFE AMIDST THE WOOD”

Photography exhibition, dedicated to the international forest year, compiled of pictures made by nature photographers, who have graduated as foresters from the Luua Forestry School: Jüri Pere, Rivo Tarum, Tarmo Mikussaar, Aivar Pihelgas, Jaak Neljandik and Mehis Maipuu, complemented with pictures by silviculture teacher Veiko Belials, and also with photos by students, submitted to different nature photography contests.

 

JAAN KÜNNAP: "PICTURES IN THE MOUNTAINS"

In the 1970s Jaan Künnap was a dedicated alpinist. At the same time – 40 years back – he also took his first pictures of mountains. Expeditions have taken Jaan Künnap to different continents, therefore we can see here pictures of nature from the mountains of Nepal, Middle Asia and South America. To emphasize the majestic shapes of mountains, he often uses black-and-white technique.

 

"THE BEST OF NATURE PHOTO OF THE YEAR 2011”

This year the largest nature photography competition “Nature photo of the year” was held for the 11th time. More than 10 000 photographs from 1850 authors were submitted to the competition. Following the tradition through all these years, the winning pictures are again on the walls of the venue of the Matsalu Nature Film Festival. “Nature Photo of the Year 2011” was dedicated to the international forest year and to the 90th anniversary of the Estonian Ornithological Society.

REMO SAVISAAR: "MIRACULOUS BIRDS"

The photo exhibition “Miraculous birds” is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Estonian Ornithological Society and selected works by Remo Savisaar are presented here. We often admire colourful and exotic birds, leaving unnoticed or even having no idea about our varied Estonian bird fauna. All together there are 20 large-scale portraits of different birds, among which we can see pictures of common birds, quite well-known to the public, but also portraits of some rare ones

 

TOOMAS TUUL: "SIX PICTURES OF ESTONIA"

Toomas says about his work, that these pictures are by no means classical nature photographs, as too much computer altering has been applied.

 

MARK SOOSAAR: KIHNUKIELSED LJÕNNUD“ (BIRDS IN KIHNU DIALECT)

Do you know which Goshawk has a cat’s head? Have you ever seen a Juniper Hawk or a Cormonaut? If you want to get acquainted with such birds, just come and enjoy the exhibition in the tiny gallery of the general store. Pictures are taken by Mark Soosaar in 2009-2011
