The editorial board of journal Eesti Loodus (Estonian Nature) selected the elm and the white elm as trees of the year 2011. Autumn is the period when they are most noticeable.
The elm and the white elm belong to the same genus, Ulmus, and are rather similar. In city landscaping we see them more often than in forests; forests with a dominance of elm only take up about 10 hectares in Estonia but splendid solitary trees can be seen in all Estonia.
