Black, wary, smart birds, with a glossy black plumage, non-migrating. They are somewhat more numerous in winter in Estonia, up to forty thousand. Female and male have similar plumage, a strong neck and rounded tail tips. In flight the wing primaries are spread out. A fully grown male is a couple of hundred grams heavier than the female and the beak looks a little more “masculine“. The couples move together through the year; the young birds and “widowed“ ones must find a partner.
