February 24th
Independence Day flag ceremony this year was at sunrise at Ristna nina on Hiiumaa. The first half hour was promising – interesting creatures worth note were 2  Steller’s eiders and 4 black guillemots. But then the Kõpu peninsula was buried in thick fog and the feast was over this time.
Since nothing more could be done on the shore in the fog, I had a more thorough look at the Aia and Pika road areas in Kärdla. At the springs here 2 dippers caught my eye. There were more than ten blackbirds, some  starlings and a couple of chaffinches at the feeding places in addition to the usual great tits and greenfinches. These migrant birds are not early arrivals, they have been in place the whole winter at the birdfeeders .
