Watching the web camera yesterday evening at around eight o’clock it was quite clear that lovemaking was in the air, but the raccoon dogs ran off. I would not have guessed that they would return to complete the act in camera view a little before half past ten in the evening. The recent cold winters have shown that the heat period is generally in March. The female’s gestation period lasts two months and before mid-May this raccoon dog family at least can expect offspring.
When the mating act is finished canines usually stay “locked“, as can be seen in the video. It has a purpose – the semen cells must reach their target, that is, the female’s egg cells, which ensures fertilization.
