Before trees come into leaf a low, sparsely branched shrub flowers in mixed forests on fertile soils, preferring a very slightly marshy and preferably lime-rich habitat. On the forest floor a fight for light goes on and flowering has to be hurried. The mezereon or daphne occurs all over Estonia but it is never found in great numbers.
The flowers, reminding of lilac in colour as well as slightly in shape, are attached to the stem by threes or fives. The fragrance is strong, it helps to attract early-spring pollinators.
It is useful to know the plant dedicated to the "spring sky gods“, beautiful but poisonous throughout.
