Peacock
Until midsummer we meet the individuals that started flying in August last year and mostly have hibernated in buildings: the peacock ”oldies”. Flowering plants and nectar from trees and shrubs provide springtime refreshment
The base colour of the forewings is dark red. The large multi-coloured eye patches are so characteristic that is is not really possible to confuse with any other butterfly species. Wing edges are wavy (ridged), wing span 5-6 centimetres; the undersides of the closed wings remind of dried leaves or a piece of tree bark – so rapidly a striking exterior can be hidden.
