Nest-building time for wasps

Photo and text Peeter Teedla
Translation: Liis

Female wasps are in a hurry now. The nest must be finished so that there is somewhere for the next generation to grow up in. To build the globe-shaped nest tree fibres scraped from planks or trees are used. The fibres are moistened with saliva and pressed into a thin, paper-like sheet. In the nest are combs with cells where the first eggs are laid. Looking closely at the photo the outline of the comb can be glimpsed at the ”door”.

Photographed on Saturday May  26th.
