Sea pea

Sea pea     Rand-seahernes       Lathyrus maritimus

On sandy seashores we sometimes come across the sea pea with delicate pink or purple flowers, four to seven together. The stems lie down, leaves are elliptic, in three to five pairs, and the stipules are egg-shaped.

The sea pea belongs to the Pea family and the Lathyrus genus as does the familiar yellow-flowered Meadow vetchling  (Lathyrus pratensis).
