Why do we notice such a small plant? If there are just five centimetres of stem and the flower diameter is one centimetre then the flowers seem somehow very large.
In addition to the above sometimes they grow in quite large groups, for instance on fallow fields; in more humid locations the plants of course are larger.
The stems have short branches that look like thickened knots – from this the first part of the name.
In the era of manors, cattle was fattened with plants mowed on the fallow fields; this remains in the folk name nuumhein, fattening grass.
