Few species of the ten-footed (Decapoda) crustaceans live in Estonian nature: in fresh waters the European or noble crayfish, and in sea waters the Baltic prawn, the common shrimp (Crangon crangon) and as recent arrival, the Chinese mitten crab or big sluice crab (Eriocheir sinensis). The latter two are sea bottom inhabitants.
Shrimps and prawns with their long muscular lower body are good swimmers; those inhabiting our waters are around five centimetres, or slightly less ot more. Depending on the wave direction due to winds they may be seen in the calm waters of the shallow shore zone; in north-western Estonia they have lately been seen moving briskly around about a metre from the water line.
