Black guillemot

 

I couldn’t stand the lazy life any more and headed for the west coast on a wader trip. On Saturday the weather tended to be rather rainy and I could not visit particularly many places. At one of Harjumaa’s best wader shores, Laoküla near Paldiski, no particular birds were noticeable because of the high water level. And the very best location had to be left unvisited because a rather hard shower started pouring down my back. The only noteworthy moment of the day was in the afternoon at Pakri cape where during only a few minutes 5500 scoters (Melanitta nigra)went past on migration. At the edge of the Pakri cape at least 7 black guillemots (Cepphus grylle) were notable, this is the only place in Estonia where this species breeds regularly.

On Sunday nearly all the best wader spots in Läänemaa got checked (Haversi, Põgari, Haeska and others) but due to the high water level emptiness reigned there too. Only some lonely sandpipers and plovers moved around.
