Goldenrod

 

 

We can see our only native goldenrod species everywhere: in clearings, meadows, roadsides, waste lands ... The plant is indifferent to soil conditions too, growing in dry as well as waterlogged soils and peat. Naturally such a splendid flowerer catches attention, in the flowerhead of a well grown plant there are a hundred or more composite flowers, and of course other flowerers have become scarcer.

 

The height of the plant may be up to one metre, in the soil is a short rhizome from which a couple of flowering stems rise, with oblong leaves with serrated margins. Flowering lasts until night frosts.

 

 Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis)

 

The Canada goldenrod is an exotic species that was brought into gardens but that today has spread into our natural biotopes. The „American“, growing in strong clumps, is quite threatening in our meadows, it forces ancient plants out from its growing area and would need restriction by mowing. It flowers beautifully but the flowerheads are smaller, with arced stems. Both are good honey plants.
