Pretty and slightly poisonous

Bittersweet

Bittersweet      Harilik maavits      Solanum dulcamara

The bittersweet is a perennial semi-shrub and quite common in our nature. It likes to grow in sparse forests or in humid thickets for instance on the banks of lakes.

The mildly toxic berries have already some colour in more open habitats, they hang beautifully shining on the fruit stalks and appear translucent against the light ...

All parts of the plant are weakly toxic and eating the fruits can cause vomiting. In case of poisoning vomiting is only to the good: the body can get rid of most of the ingested poison.
