Scoters migrating
Since the meeting of the
Estonian Ornithological Society’s Council was held in Tuksi in Läänemaa this time, I stayed for a few more days in Läänemaa to check the local wader hotspots once more and also to see the migration at
Cape Põõsaspea. Admittedly it was an extremely boring weekend. At Cape Põõsaspea no particular movement was to be seen yet, only some minor scoter and duck flocks and a few stray loons and grebes moved between the cape and Osmussaar island towards southwest. When it gets cold in the north then of course a greater throng starts at Põõsaspea.
In the best wader spots of Läänemaa, at Haversi and Telise beaches, plovers and sanderlings were about nicely but nothing exciting was to be seen among the common species this time.
From Tartumaa however a message arrived that 2
red-breasted geese (
Branta ruficollis) had landed at Valguta polder. These are extraordinarily early autumn migrants, usually they are not seen until October. From where did they turn up?
