Siskin pair
Siskin Siisike Carduelis spinus
Siskin flocks are moving, the flight view is wavy, billowing up and down.
The male bird is more colourful even when winter is coming: crown and chin are black, back greenish, with narrow dark streaks. Cheeks, breast and rump yellowish green. The females’ crown, chin and back are grey covered with blackish bars. Young birds resemble the females but a little yellower and with more streaks.
The number of those remaining for winter is quite variable over years; we will see about this year when they begin visiting the birdfeeders. There, it is useful to compare them to the quite similar but slightly larger greenfinches.
